Every six months as part of your child’s regular visit to the dentist, the hygienist will most likely recommend that your child receives a professional fluoride treatment. Most people believe that their children receive enough fluoride in their drinking water, and toothpaste. That is not always the case, especially because some children are not as diligent as they should be when it comes to their oral health care.
Fluoride protects the teeth by gaining with the minerals and creating a strong, resistant outer layer.
The American Dental Association recommends fluoride to be done every six months for children who have a history of poor oral hygiene, prolonged nursing or bottle feeding, poor family dental history, dry mouth, braces or a child with a high diet in sugar are considered in a higher risk bracket for tooth decay.
There are many at home fluoride treatments including mouth washes or prescription toothpaste, but it is best to discuss this with your dental healthcare professional.

What are dental implants and are they worth it? Dental implants are titanium screws, comparable to the roots of a tooth, used to secure and dental prosthetics, such as crowns, bridges or dentures. Dental implants are the most successful procedures done to date. The five year success rate for a lower jaw implant is approximately 95% and 90% for the upper if properly cared for, as you would your natural teeth, such as brushing and flossing twice a day.
There are quite a few major positive points for a dental implant, and those are; appearance, they look and feel like your natural teeth, in the case of dentures they can improve speech and comfort, because they secure the fit and can make them feel like natural teeth.
Dental implants are not for everyone. There are a few factors that your healthcare provider will look at. One of them is your past oral care, or the bone structure of your jaw, a lack of bone in your jaw can cause an implant to fail.

Early in the 1920’s chewing tobacco was made popular by Major League Baseball, but wavered when the “spitball” was banned. The trend has picked up steam in the last thirty years, when anti-smoking became very common; some people believe that smokeless tobacco is not as harmful. In fact, it holds many of the same risks, and a few more. There is an increased risk of mouth, throat, cheek, gum, lip, tongue cancers and besides life threatening, the surgery can leave your face, jaw and chin disfigured, as well as an increased risk of kidney and pancreatic cancer. The fiberglass and course particles scratch against the enamel on your teeth making the teeth more sensitive and susceptible for cavities. Gum disease is a leading problem with smokeless tobacco users because the irritants cause your gums to recede from your teeth and can cause your teeth to move and fall out, as well as bad breath.

The idea of red wine being good for your health is not a new idea but you may have not heard about the positive effects 3-4 ounces of red wine does for not just your cardiovascular health, but also your oral health.

The reason being red wine contains two key ingredients, one an antioxidant known as proanthocyanidins, found in red wine, and dark chocolate counteracts a bacteria known as streptoccus mutans, with sticks to your teeth and saliva, and can cause tooth decay. The second ingredient in red wine is known as polyphenols, which is found in the grape seeds, and helps control inflammation due to gingivitis or infection and even periodontal disease.

Many young men and women have begun getting a piercing in or around the mouth, and the dangers of an oral piercing are not limited to tongue rings, this includes: cheek, lip (upper and lower ; known as snake bites or a Monroe or Medusa), lower franum (webbing), Superior franum (smiley), the tongue and labret. Each of these piercings poses a different threat to your teeth, gums, and the surrounding area. There is more than just a small threat for infection.

A metal bar bell, a piece of jewelry that can be up to 1.6mm, just long enough to hit and damage your teeth. These chips can occur when eating, or when you are first talking with your new ring. The chips can sometimes be filled with a white filling or could be as damaged as needing a root canal and crown. This can be very expensive.

Another area that can be damaged by an oral piercing is the gums, especially the area surrounding the piercing. The metal (or plastic ball) rubs against the area causing the gums to erode. This can become very painful and will cause your teeth to become loose. This is not a quick fix. This gum surgery needs to be done by a periodontist and can be very painful, and expensive.

The third and most common danger for an oral piercing is of course, infection. Your mouth holds bacterium, which is brought into your bloodstream by the wound, or ring. This is why it is important not to smoke or touch your ring, especially while it is healing.

So if this oral piercing is not something you will change your mind about, remember, make sure you go to a certified place, ask questions and ask to see their sterilization methods. Not doing these things can lead to paralysis or death. It sounds extreme, but do your research.

What is a sports mouth guard and what is the importance? A mouth guard is a piece of plastic placed in your mouth to protect your teeth from injury during athletic activity. There are three different types of mouth guards; stock, boil and bite, and one that is made by your dentist.

The first form of mouth guards, the stock guard, can be bought at most sports equipment stores, and can be worn right away. This is the least comfortable because of the universal size and bite, and can cause very painful sores in the mouth and does not always offer the best protection on an individual basis. These are normally not recommended for individuals with braces.

The second and slightly better option is the “Boil and Bite” mouth guards. These offer a slightly better fit, because you mold the guard to your specific bite, but it is not always an exact fit. The length of the guard may still be too large for some mouths, and can be uncomfortable if you do not bite hard enough on initial placement.

The third and best option for a sports mouth guard is one that is created at a dental laboratory and fitted to exactly your mouth. This offers the most protection and comfort. Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth and those are sent to lab, just for you.

Mouth guards should last, and proper care should entail brushing the guard and it should be placed in a ventilated hard case so that air may go through and no bacteria can grow.

Medical Reasons For Braces

A common misconception for braces is that they are purely cosmetic. This very untrue, in fact there are many different health reasons for orthodontics. The primary function of braces is to move teeth to the best possible alignment, or in dental terms, occlusion. An off bite, can lead to many oral health problems, including jaw pain. Malocclusion is the term used to discuss the relationship between the upper and lower teeth. Your orthodontist will mention of three classifications as defined by the Angles Classification Method: class 1, is an ideal relationship between upper and lower bite, Class II is more commonly known as an “overbite”, which occurs when your upper teeth protrude over your lower, Class III, is also known as an “under bite” is when the patient’s lower jaw is protruding the upper teeth. Any of these classes can require orthodontia help, because of the further problem with crowding and spacing. Crowding causes teeth to overlap, flip, rotate, or grow in the wrong position of the mouth. This can be a problem because it can make brushing and flossing difficult, leading to tooth decay, or periodontal problems.

Children should see the orthodontist at around age seven, to catch any future problems that may arise, but it is not limited to just children, adults can benefit as well. Orthodontia has been known to help correct numerous conditions, including : speech impediments, jaw or TMJ pain, difficulty chewing and eating, sleep apnea, grinding and clenching, and gum disease and tooth decay.

Dental x-rays are important because they offer insight to your mouth that includes your gums, in addition to your teeth, that can detect cavities, and the extent of decay, or even gum disease. The two types of x-rays that should be taken every year in addition to the one time every three year, full mouth series, are the bite wing x-rays and a periapical. A bitewing x-ray is taken when the teeth bite down together and shows the crown portions of the top and bottom teeth. A periapical is an x-ray of a specific tooth from the crown to the root. Most six month x-rays are covered by insurance companies, but if not, they are an inexpensive way to give your dentist the best way to view and diagnose your oral health. An area of concern with most x-rays is the issue of too much radiation, but there are precautions that are taken, as well as new technology, such as digital x-rays, which we have here in our office, making sure this is the safest way possible to diagnose you, and keep you healthy in everyway possible.

Many dentists will ask you to premedicate before your dental visit because of a heart condition or joint replacement, or even because of an immunodeficiency, but why is this so important? Premedication prior to an appointment is extremely important if you have any type of medical condition that lowers the amount of white blood cells, and can make you more susceptible to an infection. The problem lies in even simple dental cleanings that can temporarily elevate the bacteria in the bloodstream, and attach itself to a heart valve, or compromise the health of the bone attached to the joint that has been replaced. The bacterium, once it has entered your bloodstream, from your gums, is known as Bacterial Endocaditis, and can lead to a fatal infection. The antibiotics weaken the bacteria, before it enters your bloodstream, and makes it easier for your weakened white blood cells to fight.

The Importance of Sealants

Sealants are plastic coatings used to shield and protect the grooved surface of the teeth. Sealants are normally placed on the back teeth, because of the difficulty children face in thoroughly cleaning the area. Sealants can last anywhere between five to ten years if cared for correctly, and should be checked at every six month check up visit, but the doctor or hygienist. Sealants should be placed early on because there are the most cavity prone years. They are a very affordable and pain free procedure that requires no drilling and is done in one visit. It requires a paint like application, and a brief light is shined on the area to harden. Your child might notice a different feeling at first but he/she will get used to it with time.
