Many young men and women have begun getting a piercing in or around the mouth, and the dangers of an oral piercing are not limited to tongue rings, this includes: cheek, lip (upper and lower ; known as snake bites or a Monroe or Medusa), lower franum (webbing), Superior franum (smiley), the tongue and labret. Each of these piercings poses a different threat to your teeth, gums, and the surrounding area. There is more than just a small threat for infection.

A metal bar bell, a piece of jewelry that can be up to 1.6mm, just long enough to hit and damage your teeth. These chips can occur when eating, or when you are first talking with your new ring. The chips can sometimes be filled with a white filling or could be as damaged as needing a root canal and crown. This can be very expensive.

Another area that can be damaged by an oral piercing is the gums, especially the area surrounding the piercing. The metal (or plastic ball) rubs against the area causing the gums to erode. This can become very painful and will cause your teeth to become loose. This is not a quick fix. This gum surgery needs to be done by a periodontist and can be very painful, and expensive.

The third and most common danger for an oral piercing is of course, infection. Your mouth holds bacterium, which is brought into your bloodstream by the wound, or ring. This is why it is important not to smoke or touch your ring, especially while it is healing.

So if this oral piercing is not something you will change your mind about, remember, make sure you go to a certified place, ask questions and ask to see their sterilization methods. Not doing these things can lead to paralysis or death. It sounds extreme, but do your research.

What is a sports mouth guard and what is the importance? A mouth guard is a piece of plastic placed in your mouth to protect your teeth from injury during athletic activity. There are three different types of mouth guards; stock, boil and bite, and one that is made by your dentist.

The first form of mouth guards, the stock guard, can be bought at most sports equipment stores, and can be worn right away. This is the least comfortable because of the universal size and bite, and can cause very painful sores in the mouth and does not always offer the best protection on an individual basis. These are normally not recommended for individuals with braces.

The second and slightly better option is the “Boil and Bite” mouth guards. These offer a slightly better fit, because you mold the guard to your specific bite, but it is not always an exact fit. The length of the guard may still be too large for some mouths, and can be uncomfortable if you do not bite hard enough on initial placement.

The third and best option for a sports mouth guard is one that is created at a dental laboratory and fitted to exactly your mouth. This offers the most protection and comfort. Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth and those are sent to lab, just for you.

Mouth guards should last, and proper care should entail brushing the guard and it should be placed in a ventilated hard case so that air may go through and no bacteria can grow.

Medical Reasons For Braces

A common misconception for braces is that they are purely cosmetic. This very untrue, in fact there are many different health reasons for orthodontics. The primary function of braces is to move teeth to the best possible alignment, or in dental terms, occlusion. An off bite, can lead to many oral health problems, including jaw pain. Malocclusion is the term used to discuss the relationship between the upper and lower teeth. Your orthodontist will mention of three classifications as defined by the Angles Classification Method: class 1, is an ideal relationship between upper and lower bite, Class II is more commonly known as an “overbite”, which occurs when your upper teeth protrude over your lower, Class III, is also known as an “under bite” is when the patient’s lower jaw is protruding the upper teeth. Any of these classes can require orthodontia help, because of the further problem with crowding and spacing. Crowding causes teeth to overlap, flip, rotate, or grow in the wrong position of the mouth. This can be a problem because it can make brushing and flossing difficult, leading to tooth decay, or periodontal problems.

Children should see the orthodontist at around age seven, to catch any future problems that may arise, but it is not limited to just children, adults can benefit as well. Orthodontia has been known to help correct numerous conditions, including : speech impediments, jaw or TMJ pain, difficulty chewing and eating, sleep apnea, grinding and clenching, and gum disease and tooth decay.

Dental x-rays are important because they offer insight to your mouth that includes your gums, in addition to your teeth, that can detect cavities, and the extent of decay, or even gum disease. The two types of x-rays that should be taken every year in addition to the one time every three year, full mouth series, are the bite wing x-rays and a periapical. A bitewing x-ray is taken when the teeth bite down together and shows the crown portions of the top and bottom teeth. A periapical is an x-ray of a specific tooth from the crown to the root. Most six month x-rays are covered by insurance companies, but if not, they are an inexpensive way to give your dentist the best way to view and diagnose your oral health. An area of concern with most x-rays is the issue of too much radiation, but there are precautions that are taken, as well as new technology, such as digital x-rays, which we have here in our office, making sure this is the safest way possible to diagnose you, and keep you healthy in everyway possible.

Many dentists will ask you to premedicate before your dental visit because of a heart condition or joint replacement, or even because of an immunodeficiency, but why is this so important? Premedication prior to an appointment is extremely important if you have any type of medical condition that lowers the amount of white blood cells, and can make you more susceptible to an infection. The problem lies in even simple dental cleanings that can temporarily elevate the bacteria in the bloodstream, and attach itself to a heart valve, or compromise the health of the bone attached to the joint that has been replaced. The bacterium, once it has entered your bloodstream, from your gums, is known as Bacterial Endocaditis, and can lead to a fatal infection. The antibiotics weaken the bacteria, before it enters your bloodstream, and makes it easier for your weakened white blood cells to fight.

Sealants are plastic coatings used to shield and protect the grooved surface of the teeth. Sealants are normally placed on the back teeth, because of the difficulty children face in thoroughly cleaning the area. Sealants can last anywhere between five to ten years if cared for correctly, and should be checked at every six month check up visit, but the doctor or hygienist. Sealants should be placed early on because there are the most cavity prone years. They are a very affordable and pain free procedure that requires no drilling and is done in one visit. It requires a paint like application, and a brief light is shined on the area to harden. Your child might notice a different feeling at first but he/she will get used to it with time.

Canker sores and cold sores are very painful sores found inside or around the mouth. There are many misconceptions about what exactly these things are and where they come from. While canker sores have no exact cause cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Canker sores are not contagious, but cold sores are highly, and are the same virus that causes genital herpes. Canker sores are believed to be caused by bacteria which get into an open wound, cut, friction or burn in or around the mouth, as well as a vitamin deficiency in B12, folic acid, and iron, as well as hormonal changes associated with menopause and pregnancy, and could even be symptoms of numerous immune deficiency diseases. There is no treatment for canker sores, while cold sores sometimes require ointments and sometimes prescription medications. Cold Sores and Canker sores can go away between two days and two weeks on their own. While these legions do go away without you seeing your doctor or dentist, you should see them if it does not go away in two weeks, begins to get larger, begins to look infected, or interferes with your eating or drinking you should seek medical attention.

Many women are concerned about the effect that a dental cleaning has on the child during pregnancy, but it is very important that you do not skip your six month check up. There are many problems that pregnant women face, but due to an increase in progesterone and estrogen levels, which increases blood flow to your gums, and studies have shown that a pregnant women’s bodies react to dental plaque differently, making you more susceptible to oral sores, similar to cold sores and pregnancy gingivitis, both make eating very painful and can be very dangerous to yourself and your child. As with any infection it can lead to pregnancy complications and even in severe cases miscarriage.

Recently a few of the staff members of Kamy Dental Of Bayville and Manahawkin just got back from Richardson, Texas to advance us further into the 21st century, and learn about where the future of dentistry is going. Kamy Dental is now the proud owners of the only E4D crown milling machine in Central/South New Jersey.

What is exactly is the E4D machine and how does it change your dental experience? This machine enables us to eliminate impressions, leaving you without that unpleasant experience. An even larger plus is the elimination of the temporary crown, and the return visit for the permanent. You will now be able to get your crown in an hour, instead of us relying on a lab for your crown, and there is no more middle man, your crown involves two people, your dentist and most importantly…YOU!

How does this work? Our first step after your tooth is prepared is to scan the tooth with a 3D laser called a IntraOral Digitizer, which is “as safe as the check out counter at the grocery store”, this sends your tooth specifics to a computer, where the assistant or doctor creates your crown so that it fits perfectly, then it is milled while you wait. The last step is to try it in, glaze the tooth and you are done, ready to go in one day.

Will my insurance cover this? Why not!? It is the same crown you would get if you had to wait two to four weeks; we just are doing it in front of you, and in one day.

What is oral cancer? How do you prevent it? What causes it, and are you at risk? According to the American Cancer Society it affects over 35,000 men and women. Oral cancer has many warning signs, but the most common symptoms are : a growth or sore that does not go away, and includes the lips, tongue and cheeks, unexplained swelling, bleeding, eroding tissue, red or white patches appearing, a chronic sore throat and weight loss, but many times at the early stages, there are no signs or symptoms at all . There are lots of risk factors on contracting this disease, but remember a quarter of all cases do not fall into any of these categories. A major factor is smokers and excessive drinkers, snd they are six times as likely to get this type of cancer, and smokeless tobacco users are fifty times as likely. If caught in the early stages there is a significantly higher chance that you can make a full recovery, but sometimes there Here at Kamy Dental we have been working to change those unnoticed early stages with a new tool known as Velscope, which is a light that detects oral tissue abnormalities and is done at every cleaning and exam appointment. This procedure is non invasive and the latest at oral cancer prevention and diagnosis.
