Do You Suffer From Dry Mouth?
Dry mouth is a very common, and simple issue to cure. Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia is a condition when a person’s salvary glands do not function properly, resulting in an inadequate secreation of saliva, resulting in A sticky, dry feeling in the mouth ,Frequent thirst ,Sores in the mouth; sores or split skin at the corners of the mouth; cracked lips ,A dry feeling in the throat ,A burning or tingling sensation in the mouth and especially on the tongue ,A dry, red, raw tongue ,Problems speaking or difficulty tasting, chewing and swallowing ,Hoarseness, dry nasal passages, sore throat and most people’s concern ,Bad breath. Eighty percent of the top ten drugs cause dry mouth, and those are; hydrocodone, liniopril, simvastatin, levothyoxine, amoxicillin, azithromycin, azithromycin, lipitor, hydrochloctiazide, alprozolan, atenolol. Some things can be done to help dry mouth, switching to an alternate medication, avoiding caffeinated drinks and tobacco products , stimulating salivary flow with products such as certain sugar-free hard candies or sugar-free gum and/or using over-the-counter moisturizing products which work as artificial saliva, or some mouth rinses, which we carry in our office. It is very important that you tell your dental professional what medications you are on, prescription or not, so they can give you the best advice on how to treat this condition.
Thank You All For A Great Give Kids A Smile Day!!
For the last two weeks our offices have participated in our second annual “Give Kids A Smile Day”. All of our office participants were volunteers, and enjoyed watching most of these children getting their first look at oral hygiene, a lesson that will in no doubt, last a lifetime. Our Bayville office had the up and coming star, Stephanie Marie Hanvey, the singer of, “I’m That Girl” perform in our waiting room! There was a fantastic turnout, and we are glad to have helped our communities stay happy and stay healthy.
Should You Be Using An Electric Toothbrush?
Electric toothbrushes have come a long way since their initial appearance in the market, they are not just a gadget anymore. Using an electric toothbrush with the proper size of brush head will result in a more thorough brushing and better plaque removal compared to a manual toothbrush. You have a variety of options to choose from; oscillating brushes, sonic brushes, rechargeable or battery powered, timers, sanitizers, full brush head or compact, timers, sanitizers, the list goes on….. With so many choices how do you know which one is best for you? Which toothbrush you choose depends on your individual needs. Remember that the most important part of good oral health happens at home. What you do every day has a greater impact on your overall oral health than what we can do for you. It is essential to brush and floss properly every day. I can also tell you that all of us at the studio, as well as our family members, use powered toothbrushes. At your next hygiene visit we will be glad to discuss what type of powered toothbrush may work best for you.
Dental Plaque
We all need to take care of our mouth, most especially our teeth. It is one essential part in boosting our self esteem and our well being. Dental Plaque needs to be treated. Plaque is the film of bacteria that sticks to the teeth and spaces in between and in your gums. A hardened plaque becomes tartar. Plaque is full of germs. These germs eat what is left inside the mouth. And they leave off acids and other substances that causes more problems to the mouth like bad breath. Acids on the other hand eats away, slowly the tooth enamel and sooner or later, your teeth will fall off. Acids also remove important minerals from the tooth enamel, this is what you call demineralization.
Give Kids A Smile Day
In this economy there are about 9 million children without dental insurance so it is no wonder why tooth decay is the most common childhood disease. At Kamy Dental our community’s health is very important to us. Everyone here is very excited for our 2nd annual “Give Kids A Smile Day.” “Give Kids A Smile Day” is a community event we began last year that gives free dental exams, cleanings, and flouride treatment for every uninsured child under 12. We are trying to do our part in the best way we know how. Last year we had an amazing turn out and we are hoping for an even better one this year. Just like everything else we do here at Kamy Dental, no matter the circumstance, we want everyone to stay happy and healthy.
The Best Disinfectant
Our mouths are quite dirty as many of us might
already know and we as humans have been in a never-ending battle to tame the microbes and other nasty stuff that live among our teeth. Many dentists use hydrogen peroxide as a teeth whitening agent because it has the ability to whiten teeth under high concentrations. This is not risk free though, there is a certain safe limit to the amount of hydrogen peroxide that can be used safely for an oxidizing agent, it is a strong chemical that can damage living tissue. Under the right concentrations (which is actually a very small amount, say 3% solutions of the chemical) it has the ability to react with living tissue killing all harmful bacteria and thoroughly disinfecting your teeth.
Wounds tend to stop bleeding immediately upon contact which would be why dentists use it as an all-around gargle before and after procedures. This lowly chemical has wondrous properties when it comes to treating wounds may it be in your mouth or out. It is also, still one of the safest disinfectants in the world that produces oxygen and water as it breaks down. Bad-breath and other dental diseases can be remedies with regular gargling by diluting medical hydrogen peroxide, diluted at a ratio of one to four parts water. It disinfects and may even help whiten your teeth, but ask your dentist to be sure you aren’t sensitive to the solution.
The Reason For Bad Breathe
In the truth of things, nope, why you may ask? Well, the mouth is home to tons of microscopic life forms known as bacteria that normally don’t do anything and just live there as they have for millions of years. These bacteria feed on leftover food in-between teeth, in between the gums, and on the tongue causing bad breath at the slightest neglect of the daily dental hygiene regimen. The smell comes from the bacteria as they produce noxious gasses as they eat away at their favorite food. They also produce acids that eats away the teeth leading to tooth decay.
Having tooth decay, worsens the bad breathe problem because it offers bacteria a lot of nooks and crannies to hide so that even brushing and gargling cannot reach. The mouth is a very dirty place but not to worry, any bacteria that happens to pass through into the digestive tract is destroyed within the stomach with it’s powerful acids and digestive enzymes. This has been a proven design of the human body that protects us from these nasty bacteria getting into the bloodstream causing infections and other health problems.
The Basics Of Flossing
Here are a few flossing basics:
1. Floss one tooth at a time.
It really pays off to take care of your teeth, so you need to make time in order to floss properly. Work your way through all the sides of each tooth to scrape away the plaque that has built up.
2. Break of a long piece.
For you properly hold the floss, you need at more or less 18 inches of floss. Floss isn’t too expensive, so don’t be a miser about it. You won’t be using just one piece of it anyway.
3. Use a wax version for hard to reach areas.
There are waxed flosses to get into tight corners if your regular floss can’t get in.

Huge Rise In Dental Care Seen In Children
Using data from 1997 till 2006, researchers have found that there has been a steady increase in the need for children to get dental care mainly due to their diet and other external factors. Children need prompt dental care for their baby teeth are lost, and replaced by permanent teeth. With the common wisdom in the dental field to prevention rather than reconstruction, there has been a steep rise in these children getting tooth problems that need alot of care and maintenance to allow them to keep their original teeth lessening need for costly dental reconstruction in adult life. Dietary changes and junk food are to blame with softdrinks and the phosphoric acid they contain much to blame, a regular part of children all over the globe that eats away teeth making them softer, resulting in tooth loss.
